Most famous for its extravagant Christmas lights display at the local shopping village, Waratah is a suburb north-west of Newcastle.

Waratah is only six kilometres from Newcastle’s CBD. Its eastern border hugs Georgetown, with Broadmeadow to the south-east. Lambton is to the south, North Lambton and Callaghan to the west and Mayfield across the train tracks on its north-east border.

Much of Waratah’s history is entwined with its original industrial profile. The land that now makes up Waratah was privately owned by the Waratah Coal Company. The rail line that ran through the area made it convenient to move coal en masse. Originally only coal workers moved into the area, but as more industries took advantage of the railway, workers from a variety of trades joined them. Today the suburb stills holds some of its industrial feel, mixed with the commercial hubs that have grown to meet the demands of residents.

Why rent in

The Calvary Mater Hospital is one of Newcastle’s major hospitals and resides in the suburb of Waratah.
Founded in 1921 by the Sisters of Mercy, the hospital, along with the John Hunter Hospital in New Lambton Heights, provides the bulk of healthcare for the Newcastle region. The hospital has a 24-hour emergency department and a research department that works in tandem with the University of Newcastle. The Mater campus also houses Hunter New England Local Health District’s Mental Health facility and Mercy Hospice.
An old quarry in Waratah West contains a couple of non-traditional sporting clubs. The Newcastle Pistol Club, in existence for over 50 years, boasts Olympic-standard training facilities and educates enthusiasts about the safe handling of firearms. Newcastle Archery Club operates adjacent to this and regularly hosts events to allow newcomers to try the sport.
Waratah is popular among students thanks to its easy access to the University of Newcastle. For this reason housing in the area is a mix of cosy townhouses, flats and small family homes. The area has an assortment of new and old properties.
