Part of the City of Lake Macquarie, Garden Suburb is a little over 12 kilometres from the Newcastle CBD.
Garden Suburb was named after the fashionable “garden city” movement of the 1870s. Garden cities were designed to combine elements of the city and the country. Garden suburbs were an offshoot of this, geared towards residential settlement. To qualify as a garden suburb an area had to be on the outskirts of the city, in a rural setting, with rail access. Garden Suburb had all these features, minus the train station.
