Cooks Hill is one of the oldest areas in Newcastle. This is evidenced by the Victorian terrace houses that populate the area. Cooks Hill is popular for its arty atmosphere, but still has the beachy feel much of Newcastle is renowned for.

Cooks Hill is surrounded by The Hill, Bar Beach, The Junction, Hamilton and Newcastle West. It’s an inner city location with a rustic feel, less than a kilometre from the Newcastle CBD.

Darby Street is Cooks Hill’s most popular “eat street”. Home to some of Newcastle’s best cafes and bars, Darby Street is a constant hive of activity. From the Sunday morning latte sippers to the Friday night revellers, Darby Street caters for all walk of life. Secondhand books, vinyl, unique homewares and independent designers populate the Darby Street shops. The shopping strip is an important part of Newcastle’s economy, with most shops independently owned.

Around the corner from Darby Street is the Newcastle Art Gallery. Overlooking Civic Park, the Gallery hosts significant works from notable artists including Sidney Nolan and William Dobel, while its unique architecture is complemented by a giant Brett Whiteley sculpture that provides a striking talking point at the entrance.

Despite the suburb’s high incidence of units and terrace houses, Cooks Hill is still clearly a pet-lovers’ paradise, judging by the number of people you see walking their dogs in Nesca Park or sipping a latte with them by their side on Darby Street.

Cooks Hill is home to Newcastle Grammar School’s Park Campus, which caters for students from preschool to Year 4, as well as the Cooks Hill Campus, which is an extension of Newcastle High that provides alternative project-based education to a small number of students.

Cooks Hill is a relatively small suburb so much of the housing stock is made up of units and townhouses. The area is popular among young people and professional couples.
