It is situated approximately 2.5 kilometers northwest of the Newcastle central business district. Maryville is a residential suburb with a mix of older-style homes and newer developments. The area was originally part of the large land grant given to Lieutenant John Shortland, who named the area after his wife Mary. Maryville was officially established in the mid-19th century and was initially a hub for the shipbuilding industry, with many shipyards operating along the banks of Throsby Creek.
