Merewether

2291

From its position on the coastline just south of Newcastle, much of Merewether overlooks the beaches the area is famous for.

“THE MEREWETHER BATHS WERE OPENED IN 1935 AND ARE THE LARGEST OCEAN BATHS COMPLEX IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE.”

Why rent in

Merewether’s beaches attract thousands of tourists throughout the year; the area is one of the most popular suburbs in Newcastle. The region’s climate means the beaches are used year-round, including to host Surfest, a major annual national surfing competition held in February. The promenade encourages a healthy lifestyle, with a steady stream of walkers, runners and cyclists using it while enjoying views of the ocean, where dolphins and passing whales are regularly spotted.

Scenic Drive and surrounding streets overlook Merewether Beach, providing their expensive modern houses, units and apartments with spectacular views. Even the properties without ocean views are less than three kilometres from the sea.

The Merewether Baths were opened in 1935 and are the largest ocean baths complex in the Southern Hemisphere. They feature two large swimming pools (one of which is suitable for young children), change room facilities, picnic tables and sheltered areas. Lifeguard services are provided seven days a week during swimming season.

Winter swimming clubs train and compete at the ocean baths, with the Merewether Mackerels and Dixon Park Coldies completing laps all year round.

The nearby Merewether Surfhouse is one of Newcastle’s newest eating and drinking hotspots. Overlooking Merewether Beach, the Surfhouse offers fine dining in the restaurant and casual eating in the downstairs cafe.

Its location between the coast and the city makes Merewether an attractive spot for families, students and professionals wanting a coastal lifestyle without sacrificing proximity to the CBD, which is just three kilometres away. The area offers a variety of living arrangements, from units and family housing to luxurious multi-million dollar properties.
