The area is home to several larger sporting and entertainment venues.
To locals, McDonald Jones Stadium has had many names over the year, but has always been the home of the Newcastle Knights, a professional rugby league football club. Around the corner, Newcastle Basketball Stadium hosts games most nights of the week. The space is also used for markets and events throughout the year. Broadmeadow Racecourse has been in operation for more than 100 years, with the Newcastle Jockey Club now one of the leading racing clubs in Australia.
The Newcastle Regional Showground is Newcastle’s largest entertainment precinct and takes up a large area of Broadmeadow’s north-eastern boarder. The ground hosts the Newcastle Show annually and the Newcastle Farmers Markets weekly. It is also where the Newcastle Entertainment Centre can be found. Over the years the Entertainment Centre has been used for a variety of events, from industry showcases to concerts for popular international artists. It is also where Star Struck, the Hunter’s schools-based variety show, is held.
Broadmeadow does not have any primary schools, so younger children usually attend school in neighbouring suburbs. The area has two selective high schools. Hunter School of the Performing Arts caters for students gifted in the areas of dance, music and dramatic arts, while the deceptively named Merewether High School is an academic selective high school.
Housing in Broadmeadow is a combination of townhouses, units and family homes. Some areas are heritage listed due to the significant age of the suburb.
