Neighbouring the University of Newcastle is the suburb of Birmingham Gardens.
With a large population of university students, Birmingham Gardens is a heavily residential area about 11 kilometres from the Newcastle CBD. To the north of the suburb is Shortland while the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan Campus makes up the eastern border. Jesmond sits at the southern end of the suburb.
The area is named after the English town of Birmingham and has existed as a standalone suburb since the 1930s. It has a small park called Harold Myers Park, which features a large grassy field with children’s play equipment. Across from the southern entrance to the park is a short bike path that leads to University Drive.
